Homeschooling

Books on the Road

pairreading.gif No more library books.  The sad truth is, we probably won't be able to check books out of any library while we're on the road since we're not residents of any of the places we're going.  That's been causing me a lot of heartache.  I can't bring a ton of books - we don't have room.  I can't buy them and then get rid of them - too expensive.  So what do I do?  We like to read.  The kids need to read.  Here are a few options that I found for travelers who love books:

Stand up for Homeschooling

lawpic.gifA recent alert sent out by the Homeschool Legal Defense Association says, "Tennessee homeschoolers are facing the most serious threat to their freedom since the homeschool law was enacted 23 years ago."  If you are a Tennessee homeschooler, now is the time to take a stand.

"If House Bill 2795 passes, it will essentially mean the end of homeschooling in Tennessee. Parents deciding to teach their children at home would have to conform their curriculum to the material taught in public school in order for their children to be able to pass the state tests."   -HSLDA

At the heart of homeschooling is the ability to choose a curriculum.  It allows students to pursue their passions and talents at their own pace, choose materials that suit their learning styles, and to take ownership of their education.  The state proposes to take all that away by way of a manditory test.  And for what?  To measure our progress or lack of it?  We already have tests for that - the ACT and SAT.

If you homeschool in Tennessee, please stand up for your rights.  Voice your opinion to your representatives, especially the ones on the Education subcommittee.  Call them.  Email them.  Don't know who they are?  Here's a link.

Choosing a Curriculum Part 2

The next task in preparing for school is finding a curriculum for each subject  - the "texts".  I hate textbooks. They are boring and I don't remember anything I read in them.  But give me a good story...involve me in the life of the character...then I'll remember.  Consequently, we use "living" books whenever possible.  We read real accounts of ships lost on the way to the New World.  Real accounts of what it was like starving in Jamestown.  Autobiographies of slaves.  These are stories that you don't forget.  Vivid and real.

Choosing a Curriculum Part 1

childrens_books_sm.pngI love this part of homeschooling.  The boys are off to a Harlem Globetrotters Exhibition and I am alone with a cup of coffee and my favorite school resources scattered around me.  Now is the time to choose what we will learn next year and how.  Which books will make the cut.  It's like pulling a chair up to a buffet.
