Ben Journeys to Jamestown Settlement PDF Print E-mail

For weeks we've been reading about the settlers who came to Jamestown and how America got started.  Today we got to visit Jamestown Settlement, a replica of Jamestown, and see it all first-hand.  It was so cool!  The museums were great, but then we got to go outside and it got even better.  We saw the Indian village that showed the way the Indians lived before the settlers arrived.  We got to walk through their houses and see how they actually lived.  Ben even tried out a bed in one of the Indian homes.  Surprisingly comfortable, he said.  From the Indian villiage we went to James Fort.  We saw the blacksmith and the carpenter both working.  We even learned about muskets and heard one being fired.  It was so loud we had to plug our ears!  Then we went to the docks to see the replicas of the ships that the settlers sailed to America in.  They weren't as big as Ben was expecting.  He was impressed that the settlers managed
to make it to America at all.  We looked for some of our favorite characters from this time period...Captain Newport or John Smith, in the Jamestown Settlement, but they weren't there.  Bummer.  We were hoping to ask them a few questions.  For example, legend has it that John Smith was nearly killed after being stung by a stingray - even had his grave dug.  Later, after he recovered, he ate the stingray.  Ben wanted to know what stingray tasted like?  Guess we'll never know.
