Ben sees the Atlantic Ocean! PDF Print

Today we visited First Landing State Park in Virginia.  The Visitor's Center had a great display explaining when and how the settlers arrived.  In case you didn't know, the first permanent English colony in America was established at Jamestown, VA in 1607 - that's 400 years ago!  The settlers arrived on 3 ships - the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery.  At first they had a very hard time.  Many of the settlers were "gentlemen" who thought they could spend their days looking for gold instead of working.  Captain John Smith eventually put a stop to that, telling them if they didn't work they couldn't eat!

We went from First Landing State Park to the Boardwalk right by the Atlantic Ocean.  It was amazing!  The ocean looked so big and the sand was soft and warm on our feet.  We walked up the beach to a place where we could rent a pedal car and then made our way back to a place to eat lunch.  Some of us had a hard time pedalling because our legs were too short:)  Ben said this was his favorite day so far.
