History Trippin'

In our newsletter we'll provide lesson plans and activity suggestions so that you can learn along with us!  Continue...
Junior Paleontologist Dig PDF Print E-mail
The Mammoth Site is home to the bones of at least 52 Columbian Mammoths and 3 Wooly Mammoths.  It marks the first time these two species were found in the same spot.  The site is a sink hole where mammoths came to drink long ago.  Some of them fell in and couldn't get out because of the steep sides.  Their bones are the ones that are being unearthed.  Most of them are left "in situ", which means that they are still in the ground exactly where they were first uncovered.  It's a large and fascinating site.  When we first arrived we took the 30 minute guided tour.  After the tour we walked through the museum and then downstairs to the lab where certain bones are taken to be studied and preserved.

When it came time to dig, the children were taken to an area that was prepped specially for them.  It was marked in grids, the way archaeologists and paleontologists would dig at a site.  The guide made sure the children understood the difference between archaeologists and paleontologists (do you know?) and then told them what they'd be searching for.  There were a few rules: no throwing dirt, the proper way to handle a trowel, etc.  Then the shoes came off and the kids dove in.  They loved it, all of them, from the 3 year olds to the 11 year olds.  Our boys proudly discovered a rib bone and a tusk.
