tennessee.gifMake a movie in your mind to remember the capital:
Picture a tennis player smashing a large pill over the net, instead of a ball.
Smash + pill = Nashville and tennis = Tennessee.

During the Mexican War there were 30,000 volunteers from the state of Tennessee.  The government only called for 2,800 volunteers.  No wonder Tennessee is called the Volunteer State!

Thanks to Daniel Boone and his Wilderness Road that began in Virginia and cut through the rugged Cumberland Gap, many early pioneers traveled the trail to Tennessee.

Test your Knowledge:

Who?
Not all the songs and stories about me are true, but did kill 105 bears in nine months.  I was a hunter, scout, frontiersman, soldier, and a congressman.  I'm identified in folklore by my coonskin hat.  I was killed defending the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas.  Who am I?
Answer: Davy Crockett

What?
Andrew Jackson built this white mansion in 1819 for his wife, Rachel, who died less than a month before her husband was inaugurated as President.  Fire destroyed much of the home at one time, but it was rebuilt, and Jackson retired here.  What is the name of this historic home?
Answer: the Hermitage, Nashville

Where?
"Chat-to-to-noog-gee" is what the Creek Indians called Lookout Mountain.  It means "rock rising to a point."  From its top, it is said that you can see seven states on a clear dcay.  Beneath the mountain are underground caverns and waterfalls.  Find Chattanooga, and see if you can locate Lookout Mountain.

Here's a fun game to play when you're bored...it's great for traveling:)

The Stars and Striped Game
Hurray for the red, white and blue!  Identify things that are colored red, white, or blue (example: red fire engine) or have red, white, or blue in their name (example: blueberries).  The object of the game is to see who can think of the most reds, whites and blues, until only one player is left.  Only four seconds to think or you are out.  The color of the objects must be in sequence - first person names a red object, second player a white, third names a blue, anext names a red, and so on.  Last one still in the game wins!
