All of us have the capacity to bring joy to another
person. You don’t need to have a lot of
money. You don’t need social status or
prestige. You don’t even need a fixed
address! You just have to have your
heart in the right place. Because we
have a heart for children and learning, we have offered to host Flat Stanleys for the children at St.
Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN while we’re on the road. Here’s how it will work.

Well it's finally time to say goodbye to Flat Ben. He's been with us
for almost a month now and he's getting homesick. He'll be taking a
couple of souvenirs with him, along with all of the journal entries
about him and all of the pictures of him on the road. We hope that
he's had a good time, but mostly we hope that the young lady who sent
him to us had a good time reading about his adventures. We are looking
forward to meeting the next flat traveler from St. Jude! Can't wait to
see who it is.

For weeks we've been reading about the settlers who came to Jamestown and how America got started. Today we got to visit Jamestown Settlement, a replica of Jamestown, and see it all first-hand. It was so cool! The museums were great, but then we got to go outside and it got even better. We saw the Indian village that showed the way the Indians lived before the settlers arrived. We got to walk through their houses and see how they actually lived. Ben even tried out a bed in one of the Indian homes. Surprisingly comfortable, he said. From the Indian villiage we went to James Fort. We saw the blacksmith and the carpenter both working. We even learned about muskets and heard one being fired. It was so loud we had to plug our ears! Then we went to the docks to see the replicas of the ships that the settlers sailed to America in. They weren't as big as Ben was expecting. He was impressed that the settlers managed
to make it to America at all. We looked for some of our favorite characters from this time period...Captain Newport or John Smith, in the Jamestown Settlement, but they weren't there. Bummer. We were hoping to ask them a few questions. For example, legend has it that John Smith was nearly killed after being stung by a stingray - even had his grave dug. Later, after he recovered, he ate the stingray. Ben wanted to know what stingray tasted like? Guess we'll never know.

Today we visited First Landing State Park in Virginia. The Visitor's Center had a great display explaining when and how the settlers arrived. In case you didn't know, the first permanent English colony in America was established at Jamestown, VA in 1607 - that's 400 years ago! The settlers arrived on 3 ships - the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery. At first they had a very hard time. Many of the settlers were "gentlemen" who thought they could spend their days looking for gold instead of working. Captain John Smith eventually put a stop to that, telling them if they didn't work they couldn't eat!
We went from First Landing State Park to the Boardwalk right by the Atlantic Ocean. It was amazing! The ocean looked so big and the sand was soft and warm on our feet. We walked up the beach to a place where we could rent a pedal car and then made our way back to a place to eat lunch. Some of us had a hard time pedalling because our legs were too short:) Ben said this was his favorite day so far.

Our campground has some really great stuff - swimming pools, bike trails, playgrounds, and a putt-putt golf course. So today we decided to test our golf skills. Ben really enjoyed the course and ended up getting a hole-in-one on Hole Number 2. He was the only one to get a hole-in-one. Way to go, Ben!
