I second the Creation Museum suggestion for Cincinnati/Kentucky!

The suggestions for Atlanta by Vicki are wonderful. Don't miss the Cyclorama which depicts the Battle of Atlanta and is in Grant Park near the zoo. See the pandas at the zoo. As for my current home, New Mexico, I suggest the pueblos, the trip to the top of the Sandias in Albuquerque (10,600 feet), the VLA radio telescopes west of Soccorro, Santa Fe...the list goes on and on.

Thanks Kim. We've got a Jr. Ranger patch at Mammoth Cave on vacation a couple of years ago. I was hoping to do more of that on this trip too. So some places give a patch and some give a stamp in a passport book? I tried to look up the eparks website but it didn't work. I'll keep hunting. I think that would be fun.

That's too bad you will be missing the northern states. MN is a wonderful place with a lot of history. Also, if you are going to Topeka, shoot an hour down the road and hit Fort Riley. They have cute little museum and Army life is always interesting.

I already replied in the CO thread, but am just now seeing your route plans.

Honestly, I'd skip Denver completely (eat at White Fence Farm for dinner after a full day in the Springs) and make Golden your destination instead. Denver doesn't have much that is unique imho, and Golden has a ton of stuff you can't find elsewhere. I highly recommend the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum. The Buffalo Bill one was ok, but not great.

Since you will be seeing the Tetons and Yellowstone (great moose spotting in WY, just before you hit the Tetons, especially early in the moring) then skip going to Granby and the other side of RMNP.

I didn't see anything posted on the Black Hills. Skip the tourist caves, and if you want to see any, stick to the two owned by the Nat'l Parks system. My children LOVED Reptile Gardens (watch them wrestle an alligator!) and the Mammoth Dig site. Try to visit Mount Rushmore for their closing ceremonies, and again in the morning, with the fresh light shining on it. Take a drive down the Old Ironmountain Road (hope that name is right!) through the Needles, and to Custer State Park. It is similar animal wise to Yellowstone, but we saw a lot more variety in Custer. There are some carved out tunnels on the Old Iron (whatever the name is, lol!) road that frame Mt Rushmore perfectly. And there is a pretty lake with a 45 minute round trip hike by some of the cabins (camping too?) in Custer State Park. It is a nice place to picnic and stretch your legs.

Wall Drug is just kitchy shopping. It is a fun leg stretch but DON'T drive out of your way!

I didn't see Devil's Tower on your list?

Tetons... drive in the early morning, and the views are breathtaking!!!! Yellowstone... you will drive FAR more than you expect. Try to just stop one or two places each day, and ask any park ranger for the estimated eruption time for the geysers. Don't save Old Faithful for last... it will be more crowded and you'll be too tired to enjoy it. Also, take as much food into the park as you can. There isn't a ton of food service, and we found it pricey.

Oregon... Fort Clatsop is on your list. We REALLY liked Camp 18 Restaurant, which is on your way. Their weekend brunch buffet will have you rolling away from the table. All portions are MASSIVE, and it is fun to walk around and explore. There is a peaceful stream out back. http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Overview.aspx?RefID=1504

You will also be near Canon Beach. We had a blast flying kites there, and there was some nice tidepooling around Haystack Rock. Check for low tide and show up about an hour or so before hand. They often have people there to educate you and answer questions.

The End of the Oregon Trail is great, near Portland. And the Portland Science Museum (got the name wrong?) is very unique and extremely hands on. It is smaller than most, but they don't give you the answers... expect you to figure them out for yourself. We also visited the World Forestry Center in Portland. From there, you are pretty close to Mt Saint Helens Nat'l Park!!!
