Trial Run 11 Months, 2 Weeks ago
If I thought I could've gotten away with it I'd have pitched a really big FIT, but I knew it was pointless. We planned to take a short trial run this week to "work out the kinks". HA! Let me just say, Thank God we still have time to work on those kinks.

Our planned departure turned out to be day 4 of the flu for my husband. He was in no shape to drive, so we decided to wait, and one day made a big difference. It appears, for the record, that the minimum duration for the flu virus is 5 days. (just in case anyone else is making plans) So, while Daddy was looking pitiful on the sofa I spent an entire day loading the motorhome. Mind you, I was just supposed to be packing for 3 days! But, I thought I might as well put a few other things in there that we would need sooner or later. And I use the term "need" loosly, but a lot of women will understand. For example, if this coach is going to be my home for the next year or longer then I think it should feel like my home. The interior of the bus is tan with black accents. Very neutral. Very practical. Very boring. So, I added some color. I put my red throw on the sofa, added some greenery, a candle, a poster, and a rug. Much better. When the day was over I was exhausted, but pleased with my progress.

The next morning Dan was feeling better so we decided to hit the road. While the kids and I worked on their science fair project, he got his stuff packed (his stuff would be the "guy" stuff - tools, electronic gadgets, etc. I never know what he'll need). Finally, we were ready. Our mission: to pick up a tow dolly that we will use to haul our van and to go to a National Park and get a National Parks Pass. Dan and the boys were in the motorhome and I followed behind in the van. Just seeing the bus on the road made me giddy!

Then, about 1/3 of the way to our destination we realized that we were driving right into an ice storm (MISTAKE #1 - check weather before you depart) and we found out that the person with the dolly was not going to be in that day (MISTAKE #2 - "I thought you called"/ "No, you were supposed to call" - miscommunication). The final straw was that the hitch to haul the dolly somehow got left behind (MISTAKE #3 - trusting a man with medicine-head). Our only choice was to turn around and head back home, with the wailing protests of our children in the background. Our mission was a complete failure. Everyone was frustrated. After much pleading from the backseat, Daddy finally agreed to a compromise - we would sleep in the motorhome: in our hometown, in the Walmart parking lot. Ahhhh camping. There's nothing like it.

Oops! I'm sorry, I can't stop laughing!! It sounds like my family! BUT, When my hubby is sick, its worse then 3 kids being sick. Its the end of the world for our guys when they are down.

Just a thought:

This story sounds like it could have come from a chapter in my own life. I love your website and mission. My husband and I have been trying to figure out how to make homeschooling on the road a reality for our family. We have issues with money; oh yeah and we have 4 kids.

OK. I know it can be done...first, start with our budget worksheet http://www.driventoeducate.com/content/view/51/65/.

As far as the 4 kids go, this is my recommendation...buy a toy hauler 5th wheel and a big truck to pull it with. The garage area of the toy hauler can be configured however you want - add an extra fridge, add bunk beds, secure dressers to the wall, etc. You decide how to use that space. There is a loft bed above the garage that 2 children can sleep in and there is a master bedroom on the other end of the rig. Look for one with 2 slides - you'll need the room.

Also, make sure you sign up for our newsletter. I'm planning to write an article with ways to make money on the road and you won't want to miss it.
Keep dreamin' girl. Your family will be on the road before you know it!

Thanks.... We have been looking at 3 different toy hauler just like you mentioned. We are about to put our house on the market and if this is God's will for our family then I know He will bring the right family to buy our house. From there we have a place to stay for awhile while we make arrangements and save up $$$$. My husband's job is very flexible he can work from anywhere. I know if we could get out from under our house we would be able to make it all work

I know how important it is to know that you are following the path that God has laid out for you. This article, 3 Green Lights, is about what we did to know for sure.

It works.
