Tornado Tuesday **
"I don't want to die." I heard that four times from my 8 year old as
we sat on the floor in the laundry room waiting for the tornadoes to
pass. Not a fun thing to hear from a child, but definitely a teaching
moment. We were lucky. I think at last count 9 tornadoes blew through
Memphis Tuesday night, but all we lost was the top 20 feet of one tree
in the back yard, and it blew away from the house. I couldn't help but
wonder how our night would have been different if we were on the road.
There are certain weather phenomena we are used to dealing
with...tornadoes, ice storms, etc, but I'm guessing that somewhere
along the way we're going to run into something that we have no idea
how to handle. For example: put us in a mudslide in California and
we'll be toast! Wildfire? Other than avoidance, we wouldn't have a
clue what to do. So, we'll just learn as we go. Deal with things as
they come. That's part of the adventure. Still, after Tuesday, I might
have to start a campaign for campgrounds to install underground storm
shelters. How about Bunkers for Boondockers? Cover for Campers? OK,
maybe not.
